Although harvest 2017-18 officially started, because of recent rains, the majority of farmers could not enter the fields. Locally, trade is sluggish.

By that time last year, farmers already started harvesting the fields. Provided rain fell during the following days in the regions of the North, harvesting would be pushed further to the end of June. Rapeseed is going through its full ripeness stage of development.

Rapeseed: different regions, different stories

SOFIA. Collectively, the majority of rapeseed production comes from the regions of the North; as for harvest 2016-17, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, output from the regions represented approximately 65.81% of aggregate production. The Southwest and central South regions contributed to the national output by about 8.55% while the rest was harvested from the Southeast region. This year, because of adverse weather conditions during the winter and spring, from the regions of the South would be harvested much lower output.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, farmers from the North regions expect a higher yield this season because of favorable weather conditions. Although, the regions of the North hold the fort, aggregate output is projected to be lower.

Domestic and foreign developments

The majority of rapeseed is exported to EU member countries, as usually by the beginning of October, the great majority of the crop has been already shipped abroad. Domestically, consumption is small as by the 16th of June 2017, it stood at 15.43% of total output.

Prices remain nominal, as the market expects the new crop. This season, in the Black sea region, Ukraine will be a factor to reckon with since its projected output of rapeseed will be more than twice that of harvest 2016-17. Soon the sky will clear, for the result to appear!
